On the Road
The instructor for my 4th driving lesson went MIA so I was kept waiting in the car for 10 mins, until another instructor, Wee saw me. His student had gone MIA so after checking with his supervisor, he took me on my driving lesson instead. Got to drive out to the public road. Thrilled because I was getting bored with the circuit and it's more real out there. His teaching style is different too. My tendency is to slow down while make a turn at the junction or round the bend. His 'approach' is to drive nearer to the kerb and turn at normal speed (and step on the accelerator a little). I've to watch out driving past a car that is parked on the side - Wee's comment is that I drive too near it, and my turning angle is too wide (may end up 'swinging' into the opposite lane).
I made a few observations while driving a SSDC-labelled car on the public road. Taxi drivers are an impatient lot - they do not give 'chance' to newbies like me and seem to take every opportunity to show off their driving skills. Other 'more' experienced drivers will speed up, not give way or want to overtake when a SSDC-labelled car is on sight. I won't be losing my cool over such behaviours because if I do, I'm bound to become nervous. They can do whatever they want - I'm just gonna concentrate. Yup!
I'm going for my 5th driving lesson tomorrow after work. Ong recommended that I take at least two driving lessons every week. Will probably stick to one lesson per trip, unless I forsee that I can't make a second trip during the week. The thought of going for my driving lesson helps in dispelling the dreary of going back to work after an extended break :)
My 6th driving lesson is scheduled on Tues, 27 Feb. If I take two lessons per week, that will be chalking up close to $130 leh! Learning to drive in S'pore is really expensive!! I've created a spreadsheet to keep track of how much I've spent to learn driving. I should be taking my trial advanced theory test next week. The book is quite thick - hopefully I can retain the information and pass the actual test on first attempt lah!

Honk, Honk!
I learnt things like pre-operative procedures, starting and stopping engine, moving-off and stopping, steering control, braking, looking out for blind spots and negotiating corners and sharp turns. At one point, I had new admiration for taxi drivers who seem to have this amazing ability to switch lanes in such a swift and precise manner on a busy road. They have to spend long hours behind the wheels and at the same time stay alert. The car is a powerful engine which explains why accidents can be fatal.
We stayed within the circuit and learning is by repetitve practice so it became quite routine. Half-way through my first lesson, it started to rain. By the time I started my second lesson, the skies had become dark. I'm glad I opted to take auto driving afterall because there is much less coordination involved as compared to manual driving. I hear that though auto driving is easier to pick up, the driving test is more difficult to pass.
I've another two consecutive lessons today. The instructor said I might get to drive out to the public roads. Whey, that would be exciting! Driving comes with "feeling" how the car goes/moves/operates (not so much with reading the hard facts) and on-the-spot judgement. Hopefully, all goes well lah.
Hhmmm, now that my practical driving lessons are in progress, I've started to think what sort of car I'd love to own if I ever get one. Though car and COE prices have dropped, the monthly costs of keeping a car is still high. Unless there is a compelling reason to get a car, I rather keep the $$ in the bank. If you're wondering why I took up driving in the first place, that's another story. Grimlock started his manual driving lesson on Wed, 21st Feb so if we get a car, both of us will be able to drive it.
Back to my dream car, first choice would be...a Lexus RX08!
How, good taste or not? I don't know much about car specs so I'm banging on asthetic features. I'm fond of Lexus cars because they bring to mind a certain class and elegance. I probably won't be able to afford this (but not wrong to dream, right?) so my second choice...
A Skoda Roomster
I reckon I don't have to spell out why I shortlisted this car brand. I've a cat called Skoda, you know...hee hee I do fancy bringing her out for a spin in a Skoda car leh! Alas, this is a Czech brand so the price tag is gonna keep my hands off bounds. And if I've to stop dreaming and plant my feet firmly on planet earth, this should be within closer reach...
A Nissan Latio Sport
I've sat in a Nissan Latio Sport car before and first impressions are pretty good. If I do ever own this car, my preferred colour will be light gold or lime green.
Then again, I just might change my mind and come up with my fourth, fifth,... choice. It all boils down to enjoying the convenience that a car brings, yet at the same time keeping the cost within budget. Anyway, I'm not even close to getting my driving license yet, correct? Let's see how many attempts I'll need to get it, ha ha.

Oink, Oink!
Hope you had a great festive celebration/break! Today is the fifth day of CNY so it's still not too late for me to wish you an Abundant New Year. Cheers to good health and loads of laughter all year round!!
I'm enjoying an extended festive break. I had been on leave yesterday till this Friday. I'm having a jolly good time. I'm a firm believer of a Chinese saying: "To take a break is to prepare for the longer journey" (literal translation).
Allow me to tell you a short story about this pair of piggies. They are part of my beanie babies collection, ie gifts from Grimlock. They share the same birth date as I (they are much younger though, `born' in 2003) so I get quite a bit of teasing from Grimlock. While pigs are such adorable creatures, I wish TY (the manufacturer) had picked another icon for my birth date. There is another unattractive looking icon sharing the same birth date. I once contemplated writing an email to TY to voice my displeasure. Well, between the two icons, my choice is clear.
This beanie piggy is named "Luau" and here is the description:
"I love my life; it's so much fun (I can't agree more!)
Playing in the Hawaiian sun (I hope to visit Hawaii someday!!)
And then I'll hula dance all night (Not too sure if I wanna do this...)
It really is this pig's delight!" (It's the simple things in life that give the most pleasure!!!)

It's a Beautiful Sunday!
Sparks went a flying earlier in the day (I didn't know Skoda had picked up some kungfu skills)

They spent most of the time indulging in their favourite pastime - siesta!
Where has Braun gone off to? There she is, snoozing away on the study chair...

And where is Skoda? There she is, having her beauty sleep in the laundry basket...
Has Skoda shrunk? Nope, Mikki has come to check out the laundry basket too...
Where then would Skoda have gone off to?
Braun too has moved on to "greener pastures" - the SCV cable box
And Mikki back to where she started - the sofa
"Hey, I'm telling you - enough of all this sleeping business!"

Long Time No Hear!
Aarrlllloooowww! It has been some time since I updated my blog, hasn't it? (Oops, pardon the big yawn from Mikki).
Just completed a major project at work. A new colleague joined the team on Thurs, 1st Feb so the workload should get better. And the usual grouse lor...what's new right?
My kitties are doing alright. Finally, the spate of skin problems had come to an end - thank God! All three got their vaccinations done last month. Will be bringing Mikki back to the vet for her second jab in a week's time. She weighed 1.5kg two weeks back - playful, active and has an amazing appetitie. Mikki is getting on pretty well with Skoda, always trying to get Skoda to play. It is not quite the same for her and Braun. Mikki ends up chasing Braun most of the time and when she plays with Skoda, Braun watches on the side. Braun tolerates Mikki's antics, unless the little girl pushes her luck, then that is when Braun will swipe or hiss at her - nothing aggressive though. Grimlock and I have concluded that Braun will do as well in a single-cat household. I hope the ice between Braun and Mikki will soon melt. In the meantime, I'll give Braun extra attention and dote on her more (don't know if she is feeling the 'middle child' syndrome).
On the social front, I attended an ex-colleague's wedding on 21st Jan (my first this year). I enjoyed the reunion with my old friends more, ha ha. Went for a karaoke session with some of them the following Friday. Of all my previous workplaces, this bunch of people has left me with many pleasant memories, so I'll post two photos taken at the wedding - a rare instance because so far, you've been seeing photos of my cats and only one human being, my handsome nephew.
I also met up with an ex-colleague from my last workplace for lunch last week. Well bro, all things happen for a higher purpose. God has the big picture for your life right in the hollow of His hands. Enjoy the break and keep looking up!
Yippeee, Chinese New Year is just round the corner. It is the holiday break that I'm looking forward to. Did some spring cleaning, weeded out some clothes from my wardrobe and bought some new ones (you see the link?), bought some munchies (which we've already started to consume, ha ha) - much lesser than previous years and I'm just left with changing new notes for the red packets.
Now, here is a photo to show you how much Mikki has grown. She is another feisty gal, much like Skoda...

In For a Big Surprise
We found wriggling worms on the chocolates! You can imagine our disbelief. The chocolates were still way ahead of their expiry date. My stomach started to churn but I didn't see Grimlock's face turning white. Good thing I hadn't ate any of them...yucks!
One of the worms had already made a hole (circled in red)
"Life is What I Make of It"
"In 2007, I will treasure each day with great respect. Health to me encompasses physical, spiritual and mental components.
Physically, I will eat and exercise wisely, knowing that I have only one body with an original anatomical structure that I will not want to damage or lose because of an over-indulgent or unhealthy lifestyle. Spiritually, I will choose to live in love and peace with all whom I know and come in contact with. Mentally, even at age 60, I am never too old to learn, for life is an adventure to enjoy. I will look forward to each day with great expectation. Life is what I make of it and no one owes me a living."
Have a Break. Have a Kit Kat?
I think I'm allergic to Braun's medicated shampoo. This was prescribed to alleviate her fungal infection. I bathed her with it on Sun, 31st Dec 06 and my wrists started to itch. On the first day of the New Year, we discovered insects that resemble fleas on Mikki (no idea where they came from). Grimlock cleaned up her room while I bathed her with Braun's medicated shampoo. To be on the safe side, I also bathed Skoda. That was when the itch got worst and I started to have rashes the size of a 20-cent coin on my thighs. I've always had sensitive skin. Didn't sleep well last night because of the itch. This morning, the rashes had grown to patches and spreaded.
Having a good time so far :) hee hee; went back to sleep after seeing the doctor, took a late lunch, put out the laundry (now they have a nice, fresh smell), read my newspapers, play with Mikki and updating my blog now. This is better than having a Kit Kat!

Remembering to Forget
Here goes:
Forgetfulness comes naturally to most of us. But it is highly selective. But why is it that we forget the wrong things? Why is it so easy to forget the spiritual truths we need to remember, like God's incredible love for us, His gracious work in our lives, His Word? And conversely, why is it so easy to remember what we'd just as soon forget?
Why do many of us remember in great detail every embarrassing thing we've ever done? Why are some of us haunted by sins from our past, carrying their shame as if it was yesterday?
Remembering God's faithfulness is a key part of our spiritual development. But, at the same time, before our spiritual vitality can really flow, we must forget three things.
1. We must forget our sins.
Obviously we must remember our sins as we are able, in order to confess them! But having done so, we must let them go. This is basic, but we need to preach it to ourselves every day, for it is at the heart of the gospel: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
A friend told me about his son's challenges with his car, and consequently with his auto insurance. It seemed that the son had incurred some reckless driving offenses that were an indelible part of his record. Accordingly, his insurance costs were approximately astronomical.
My friend went through a number of procedures; his son went to driving school; a judge was gracious. And the record was expunged.
It was too good to be true. Just for fun, my friend called the dmv, cited his son's entire name and Social Security number, and asked about the citations on his record.
There was a long pause while the staff person checked the computer. She came back on the line. "Sir," she said, "we have no record of any offenses at all."
As my friend says, that's how forgiveness is. The fact that God forgets is like calling heaven and hearing, "There is no record of any offense." It's not that the offenses are still on the page, crossed out with heavy marker, and everyone can tell there was a big mess right there. Nor are they partially erased, but still visible. They are expunged. It is as if they never existed.
We need to take God at His word. The extent to which we dwell on and obsessively noodle on our own sins from the past—sins for which we have repented—shows the extent to which we really believe God.
Satan would lure us to live in guilt and fear. He pulls us into the shadow boxes of memory, in which our worst sins replay on the walls of our minds, flickering with their shameful power … what if we just can't forget our sins?
We need to be very clear here, or we'll miss the liberating point. It's not as if forgiveness is real only if we experience some kind of holy amnesia. It is not up to us. It is up to God. And the Scriptures say that God forgets our sins (Heb. 8:12).
2. We must forget our shame.
Sometimes, even if we have mentally let go of various sins, their residual shame still sticks. Shame can spur depression, and dysfunction of every kind.
The apostle Paul could have been a prime candidate for shame, hopelessly glugging first-century wine in order to forget the horrors of his past sins. He writes of not just his pharisaical pride, but the fact that he had presided over the harassment, imprisonment, torture, and murder of innocent human beings.
When I am tempted to despair in shame over past personal choices, I have found Paul's "Popeye prayer" in 1 Corinthians 15:10 enormously helpful: "But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect" (emphasis mine).
God's grace is stronger than our shame—most supremely, because it was defanged when Jesus died and rose again. We can choose to believe this or not. But God's magnificent provision is more than ample: we can forget our slithering shame, for Jesus took it. He scorned it, beat it, broke it. We need not take it back.
3. We also must forget our successes.
This doesn't necessarily mean that we must forget how we won the sixth-grade spelling bee, or the great projects we've completed, or viable accomplishments in various endeavors. We are to work and live with excellence as unto God, and He takes pleasure in our successes as they are offered to His glory.
But we should forget past successes if they have defined our identity or caused us to be complacent, smug, and self-congratulatory. We're not to fondle the past, dwelling on past glories. (Similarly, we must make sure that our stories of God's work and grace in our lives are not all old. If we can only point to instances of God's faithfulness from five years ago but have none from this week, then our connection with Christ is not very current.)
Again, Paul is a great model. In one of his letters he warns the Philippians against those who would put their confidence in human criteria and accomplishments.
If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more, he said, citing his power résumé that many of his day would have coveted. He could have been a total prig. But his focus was not on his past.
"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ," he said. " … One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:7-14).
Again, Paul had learned that the secret of being content did not depend on what he had, but who he knew. He knew the Lord was near. He knew how to live so immersed in Him that gracious gratitude—and the corresponding peace of God—overwhelmed his earthly fears.
The only obstacles that keep us from the rich freedom that Paul enjoyed are our own cheap snares and doubts. We get lost in these when we look to ourselves, preoccupied by our sin, our shame, our success, as if it were all about us. But if we can forget these tangles and leave them behind, like Paul, we begin to see that God's love is bigger than we ever dared to dream.
If you too are a Christian, some questions to ponder:
1) What sins, shame, or successes are holding you back from living freely?
2) Ellen Vaughn suggests "we must make sure that our stories of God's work and grace in our lives are not all old." Name some of the ways that God has worked in your life recently.
3) Read Psalm 103:8-12. What does it tell us about God's character?

Hello 2007!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
- To grow in my walk with God;
- World peace and Mother Earth will be less angry;
- Good health and lots of laughter;
- Happiness for Grimlock and my girls;
- And that you love and be loved always! (This point is best illustrated with the "rare" photos below. Pls excuse the inconsistent quality because we're in the midst of trying out our new Canon IXUS 850 digital camera.)
Just when we thought Braun & Skoda were all "lovey, dovey", Skoda decided to pull the brakes. Skoda to Braun: "Ok, that is quite enough!"
Braun to Skoda: "Alright, alright, I'm cool!"
"I gotta have my personal space!"
"Oops, we're on camera...ok ok for the official records, we're the best of pals!"
